Do you possess a flair for the dramatic and like being the center of attention? Are you outgoing, enthusiastic, and passionate about history? Are you a quick study who can learn lines quickly? Can you take on a persona from Detroit’s incredible history and deliver a rousing performance? Can you project on busy city streets so that attendees  hear you? Do you think of the world as your stage and have no problem performing in public (or singing as we walk around downtown and grab everyone’s attention)?

If so, we need you!

(While not mandatory, a nice singing voice and knowledge of spirituals is a big plus!)

Hometown History Tours is a premiere tour operator servicing Detroit, Michigan. We offer public and private narrated city tours as well as themed  tours such as the Incredible Journey to Midnight: Detroit Underground Railroad Lantern Walking Tour.

We are seeking to add more actors to our acclaimed tour and to replace one of our stars who moved out of state.

Available roles:

George DeBaptiste – in search of a strong, commanding black male to take on the role of one of the most important local figures in Detroit’s antislavery history.

Sojourner Truth / Lisette Denison Forth – we had a wonderful actor portray these amazing and strong black women. Unfortunately she moved, so you will have big shoes to fill.

Jacob Merritt Howard / Zachariah Chandler – strong white male to portray these influential United States senators who helped change the course of history.

Narrator / Laura Haviland – white female to take on demanding role of narrator and the unrelenting Quaker abolitionist.

Narrator / producer – narrator is a demanding role (lots to learn) and as producer, need to make sure tour is progressing as it should be. This role is not gender or race specific.

Compensation: $50 per night

Before applying:

Check out tour description here as well as performance dates. In addition to listed dates, we have a large student tour on Tuesday, July 14 at 7 PM.

After interview, lines will be sent to you. Rehearsal will be Monday night.

How to apply:

Interested parties, please email me a carefully crafted pitch on why you’d be a great addition to our cast and what role you are applying for.

NO GENERIC RESUMES OR COVER LETTERS! Want you to talk to me (Karin) directly.
Be creative in your pitch – or you might want to answer all or a few pertinent questions such as:

  • Why are you the right person for this role?
  • What similar things have you done that prove you can do the job? If you don’t have any concrete examples, why do you think you can do the job? Sell me!
  • What assets do you bring to the table that can turn Incredible Journey to Midnight: Detroit UGGR Tours into a premiere, must-do Detroit attraction?

List role you’re applying for in subject line and pitch in body. Also include a photo.  It would be great if you could include a short video of you taking on another persona.  Send email to: HHTMichigan@gmail.com
